Amazing Race Features Gay Brothers

Mcmillen

The new season of The Amazing Race features Dan (left) and Sam McMillen, two gay brothers from Liberty, Missouri who just recently came out to one another.

Via CBS' cast description:

Brothers for 21 years, Sam and Dan will tell you that their relationship did not truly start until last summer when they both came out and told each other that they were gay.
Growing up Christian in a conservative community, neither one of them felt comfortable enough coming out at an early age but after doing so, they've found a whole new bond with one another and instantly became closer through honesty and trust.  Sam and Dan will tell you that being gay is only one of the many aspects of their lives.
Dan describes himself as organized, open-minded and spontaneous and hopes to gain a new sense of appreciation for his life from running the Race with his brother.  His hobbies include exercise, volunteering and traveling.
Sam claims to be optimistic and happy-go-lucky and his hobbies include cinema, logic games and anything involving the outdoors.  Communication may be the biggest challenge for this Team, as they claim to be polar opposites.  From academic interests to how they approach tasks, these brothers are very different in everything they do.  Due to his passive mentality, Sam will need to be more vocal to overcome Dan's blunt, assertive personality in order to contribute to the team while on the road.
Sam is pursuing a degree in medicine while Dan has one more year left at William Jewell College to complete his business degree.  When asked what former Team they would model their style of play after, Sam points to Nick and Starr because they maintained a positive attitude which carried them to the $1 million prize. Dan identifies with the competitive style of Rob and Amber.  Both brothers hope that the Race will take their new found closeness to the next level and help them forge an even stronger bond.

Vitaminwater asks fans to concoct its new flavor

I don't drink caffeine, so my beverage of choice is often Vitaminwater. Specifically, I'm a bit addicted to the "Energy" (i.e. yellow) flavor, and I even know which deli in my neighborhood sells it the cheapest.

Today the company launched a Facebook contest that allows users to create the next Vitaminwater flavor. Users will also create the label for the bottles, which will be sold in stores in March 2010.

50 Cent and Carrie Underwood will help pick the winning label design. There's no telling what the flavor will be, but a "Flavor Buzzmeter" says ginger, mint, banana, green apple and coconut are among the most popular ingredients right now.

We can't vote for flavors until Sept. 14 or create designs until Oct. 5. However, the site has posted several games and "flavor profiles" to help generate ideas.

"Just because bacon water has never been done doesn't mean we should bottle it," warns the site's computerized guide. Um, I'm not so sure of that ...

IKEA Heights Secretly Shot Inside the Burbank Store

090209ikeaheights.jpgHere's a late afternoon diversion for those of you who frequent our favourite IKEA in Burbank. Apparently a small crew of independent filmmakers shot this web short on location at the IKEA Burbank on the fly. Is it any good? We'll leave that up to you, but you'll probably have as much fun as we did watching for actual customers unwittingly walking into scenes and their curious expressions...

We've heard of plenty of stranger shenanigans that happen at IKEAs, including marriage proposals, makeout sessions and even birthday parties with large groups appearing fully equipped with cake and party favors, celebrating inside showrooms setups and then departing right afterward. Guess us Americans are just as strange as our Chinese counterparts with our love of living at IKEA.

Check out the rest of IKEA Heights here.

The Naked Truth… Really Naked! – Grindr

Not a PG-13 app by any means, Grindr has proven to be hugely popular, growing to nearly 500,000 users in the USA alone after launching only three months ago on the iTunes.

Grindr is the only way to go as far as meeting other gay iPhone users, as it allows real-time chatting and picture sharing all from the comfort of your iPhone!

Plus it has one huge feature no of the other gay apps have, shows other users based on how close they are to you and it sorts users for you as you move. If you like someone you can favorite them so they always stay close no matter where you go.

Don’t worry if you are out of cell range for as long as you have WiFi your Grindr app works!

*Highly recommend taking cute photos with the iPhone to share your travels with others. You never know what sexy beau might be watching.

Smells Like … Justin Timberlake?

Catching a whiff of cool with Justin Timberlake.

By Joshua David Stein

Recently, Justin Timberlake was in New York City to film Saturday Night Live, but he found the time to grant a few moments to journalists in his capacity as the new face of Givenchy’s cologne, Play. The process of interviewing Timberlake has more twists and turns than a Sue Grafton novel (J Is for Justin?), so I was sworn to secrecy about his location which, it turned out, was on an empty floor of a Chelsea condo building. Upon entering the uninhabited penthouse I was asked to watch a documentary about the making of the film shoot for the scent’s ad campaign. After the doc, I was allowed into the antechamber, one room closer to the man himself, where I watched another documentary, this one about the actual fragrance. Lost in the discourse of the citrus-y high notes of Play, I was startled to feel a gentle tap on my shoulder. “It’s your turn,” said a clipboarded PR woman. I followed her through a partition and then, just like that, I had gained an audience with Mr. Timberlake. After exchanging pleasantries, we quickly got down to business.

California Dreaming

By Josh Rubin and Evan Orensten

From The Advocate  September 2009

 The Advocates: California Dreaming

Ferrari set out to create an everyday touring car that is as enjoyable on your daily commute or during a weekend drive as it is on the racing track. And after racing the new 2009 California the 120 miles between San Diego and Los Angeles, we can report that the company succeeded on every count. From the car’s aluminum construction to its mid-front-mounted V-8 engine and dual clutch to its retractable hardtop, just about every aspect of the $193,000 vehicle represents new technology. The improved navigation system and digital display, Ferrari’s first pass-through trunk, heat-resistant leather, and complete customization also make the California a pleasure to drive.

Organic Blueberry Cocktails

All it takes is a handful of blueberries to make a blueberry puree that can be added to just about any daiquiri, mojito or mixed drink for extra flavor — not to mention healthy antioxidants. Freeze extra blueberries to enjoy a taste of summer all year long. Try blueberries in these summer cocktails:

Country Thyme
Rainforest Cooler

Growing Tips:
Forgo the $5-per-pint cost for blueberries by growing a bush in your backyard. The berry can be grown almost anywhere and withstand temperatures as cold as minus-10 degrees.

Give your blueberry bush a home it'd want in the wild: where it can absorb full sun, and in acidic soil with a pH level between 4.0 and 6.0, depending on the variety.

National Underwear Day, August 5th

National Underwear Day 2008 - group shot

National Underwear Day was founded, and had its inaugural celebration in August 2003. For the past six years, Freshpair has invaded New York City the first week of August with a full-blown fashion show and scores of gorgeous models in their underwear on National Underwear Day. Last year the annual renegade sidewalk fashion show transformed into a celebrity-studded fashion event, hosted by actress and fashion maven Lydia Hearst. This year, in response to popular demand, the event has grown into an online underwear extravaganza! Bringing the celebration online will allow Freshpair to unite the growing crowd of National Underwear Day loyalists across the country and around the world!

This year's National Underwear Day will take place on Wednesday, August 5th, 2009, but Freshpair will be celebrating the entire month of August. Underwear contests and giveaways sponsored by 2(x)ist, Calvin Klein Underwear, Diesel, Natori, Wacoal and many more will take place throughout the month on Freshpair.com. Now everyone can participate in the underwear holiday!

How gay are our favorite athletes?

What Our Favorite Athletes' Twittering Says About Their Sexuality

By Barry Petchesky

You can learn a lot from a person's Twitter account, like "I'm an attention whore," and...well, that's about it. But thanks to a new tool, we can analyze our sports heroes' tweets for clues to their sexual preference.

The Stockholm Gay Pride Festival has put together a good time-waster of a program that will analyze the Twitter feed of any user, look for key words and estimate their heterosexuality. So naturally we used it on a bunch of pro athletes. It goes without saying that this is all for novelty purposes only, highly unscientific, and please don't sue us Chad Ochocinco.

What did we learn?

-The most famous jock Twitterer of all, Shaq, had to be first analyzed. With his key words of "bucket," "blow," "body," "blonde," and "dude," his 79% hetero rating seems a little generous.

-The straight arrow award goes to Andy Roddick, whose key words of "ass," "boozer," "bike," "wow," and "office" score him a 92% hetero rating and a supermodel wife.

-The not-that-there's-anything-wrong-with-that award goes to skateboarder Ryan Sheckler, who probably should have tweeted less about "new york," "shopping," "soho," "meatpacking," and "ass."

-Stereotypes enforced: the female athletes score consistently low, except for the Williams sisters. Particularly damaging were multiple tweets including the words "butch," "booty," and "pride."

-Stereotypes broken: also scoring fairly low were the MMA fighters on the list. To be fair, they talked an awful lot about "gym," "body," "partners," and "cruising."

A presentation of scores and key words from a number of athletes:

Nick Swisher: 57% hetero. Key words: new york, milk, big game, coming out, wow

Chris Cooley: 72% hetero. Key words: shop, bear, blow, rent, bruno

Quinton Jackson: 30% hetero. Key words: ass, birthday party, black jack, gym, body

Seimone Augustus: 54% hetero. Key words: booty, loring park, pride, shopping, cute

Lance Armstrong: 83% hetero. Key words: survivor, barcelona, bob, miami, clueless

Chad Ochocino: 31% hetero. Key words: ass, gym, barcelona, fame, south beach

Natalie Gulbis: 48% hetero. Key words: butch, orlando, condo, bucket, community

Dwight Howard: 59% hetero. Key words: pink, bruno, body, chips

Andrew Bogut: 62% hetero. Key words: bashing, homo, gay, available, drag

Michelle Wie: 65% hetero. Key words: partners, orlando, intentions, bunny, body

Stewart Cink: 88% hetero. Key words: master, bob, milk, bbq, golf

Cappie Poindexter: 68% hetero. Key words: boi, new york, ass, bruno, blessing

B.J. Penn: 38% hetero. Key words: gym, cruising, body, partners, rocky

Charlie Villanueva: 50% hetero. Key words: brotha, new york, gym, bruno, orlando

Serena Williams: 85% hetero. Key words: good work, orlando, miami, body, clean

Venus Williams: 92% hetero. Key words: partners, cute, cook

Georges St. Pierre: 17% hetero. Key words: ass, booth, sport

Feel free to use the site to analyze your own favorites, and leave the results in the comments.

Deadspin

Gay-Test Your Twittering

By Ryan Tate

Stockholm's gay pride organizers have created an application to analyze your Twitter and score how gay you are. As a useful tool, it's more than a little silly. As a piece of marketing, though, it's brilliant.

No matter how dubious the results — the app finds it impossible to cast judgment on Elton John, while Ellen DeGeneres is deemed 73 percent straight — it's all-too-tempting to take just a few seconds to pull up a gay/straight judgment made just for you. Or your significant other. Or your friends. Or various celebrities. Or, you know, all of the above, possibly.

Next thing you know you're reading about heteronormative oppression and checking out the Stockholm Pride website. And realizing that while technology may give everyone 15 minutes of fame, it allows them to be judged eternally, via Twitter, Facebook, Google and the websites of marketers like the ones at Stockholm Pride, the ones savvy enough to realize how much we like this sort of relentless assessment. Gay or straight, it seems we're all masochists at heart.
