A man walks past. He is impeccably dressed, well-groomed, and confidently sports a man purse, or murse, in a way that is enviable, and although his slacks cover them, you feel certain his socks are argyle. But wait… there is also a woman on his arm. You aren’t sure, it could be his intoxicating aftershave causing you not to think clearly, but he may just be the epitome of the VH-1 Pop Culture Dictionary term “Metrosexual”. That is, he is heterosexual, but spends more time on his appearance than most monks spend in prayer.
The term was first seen in print in Mark Simpson’s 1994 article, “Here Comes the Mirror Men” published in The Independent. He explains, “Metrosexual man, the single young man with a high disposable income, living or working in the city (because that’s where all the best shops are), is perhaps the most promising consumer market of the decade… he’s everywhere and he’s going shopping.”

Simpson went on to write numerous articles on his coined term, and in one of them, “Becks the Virus”, he named David Beckham the poster boy for metrosexuality.

Grooming: Taking it All Off

This week we bring you the art of sugaring - a technique known quite well to the ladies (particularly to those who make frequent trips to Brazil), but just starting to make its way into the world of men's grooming. Sugaring is similar to waxing, but removes smaller patches of hair at a time. As a result, it's a bit more precise, but takes a little longer (and thus prolongs the pain just a tad). The bonus, though, according to NYC sugaring mecca Face to Face's owner Enrique Ramirez, is that "sugaring is all natural, so there's less irritation." True, as sugaring's name implies, it utilizes sugar, lemon juice, and some other edible ingredients to pull the hair out. And, as Enrique pointed out, "sugaring pulls the hair out in the direction of the follicle, so there's less of a chance of ingrown hairs." Beautiful.

Mark Simpson, the man credited with coining the term “metrosexual,” was the first to hail David Beckham as the ultimate metrosexual. He is not the first athlete to enhance his star status by playing the glamour card, but he is quite possibly the best. A bronze statue in Thailand is testament to his iconic powers--as is the crazed fan who reportedly licked every toilet seat she could access in a fashionable hotel in hopes of tasting one he had used.

Chances are pretty good that, when you think of people who make a career out of modeling, you probably think about someone who dons beautiful, expensive clothing and struts down the runways in Milan, Italy.
You probably don’t think about a person who is so thin that they look emancipated, that only exercises as a way to shed the couple of calories that they ate during the day. While the idea of becoming a model appeals to you, the lifestyle doesn’t.
Instead of starting a career as a fashion model, maybe you should consider becoming a fitness model.

It seems like in Los Angeles, anyone can throw some moisturizer in a jar, slap a label on it and call it a product line. Here in New York, however, a true, home-grown cosmetics company with nationwide success is something of a rarity. The undisputed
leader of this very small pack is the brainchild of Chelsea wunderkinds Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz, called, appropriately enough Malin + Goetz. They wowed the very discerning folks at Barney's with their no-nonsense, startingly effective, free of dyes and chemicals products and snagged distribution in all their stores around the country. We lucky New Yorkers have the pleasure of being in the immediate vicinity of their world headquarters labratory on 7th Avenue in Chelsea.
But like any good success story (empire?), M+G keeps on giving. The boys have opened their second Manhattan location on the increasingly fabulous Upper West Side. Now there's no need to schlep below the Park to get your jojoba face scrub or mojito lip balm (two of our absolute favorites). Also, in an adorable homage to the neighborhood, the store has kept the "La Gran Esquina" sign from the Puerto Rican barbershop that used to occupy the space. Juxtapose that with the chic, cut-out cherry wood chest and white atmosphere (designed by the indomitable Craig Konyk), and you've got yourself a very welcome addition to Amsterdam Avenue.
Just be sure to pick us up a bottle of the Grapefruit Face Wash on your way home.

Much of the focus on pheromone colognes is centered on their significant ability to sexually arouse. However, human sex pheromones have yet another profound benefit that many are not aware of.
Pheromone colognes can have an embracing effect on the mind and emotions of the wearer and those around him.
One such example includes the reduction of anxiety and nervous tension. Anxiety and nervous tension accumulate into stress, and stress can have very negative effects on both your ability to think clearly and on your body. When stress begins to affect your ability to think clearly, you begin to have a hard time staying focused. This can affect everything from work, projects, grocery shopping, classroom lectures, and conversations with girls, friends, and family. Your short-term memory capacity fails to work as efficiently, and recalling memories that are long term becomes much more difficult.
Inside your body, stress releases a destructive hormone called Cortisol that can eat away at lean muscle tissue, which results in a slower metabolism. Along with the loss of muscle tissue, Cortisol also increases fat storage, both of which can contribute to an increase in the gain of unsightly body fat.
Thus, the anxiety reducing effects of pheromone cologne offer advantages to the wearer that transcend far beyond creating a more emotionally comfortable and stimulating situation when meeting new people.
Sex pheromones also have a wonderful effect on enhancing feelings of self-confidence. Having a greater internal belief system can do wonders for the emotional well being of any person. When you’re confident, you take the lead and make decisions. You get things done. You are well grounded in your belief and ability to accomplish tasks. And, people gravitate towards confidence because confident people exudes success and happiness.
Wearing human sex pheromones may even have a psychologically therapeutic effect on the wearer. People engage in negative affirmations every single day. Affirmations are personal statements we make about ourselves. For example, people may say to themselves I’m so stupid, I’m just not good enough, People just don’t like me, etc.
Saying these make you feel awful and lowers self-confidence. Sex pheromones allow you to subconsciously feel confident, dominant, and relaxed while being so. The more you wear pheromones, the more your mind grows into this mind frame of being confident and alpha. Thus a therapeutic effect is created as confidence is built and negative affirmations are buffered away. If you tell yourself I’m so stupid every day, you’re going to act and feel stupid. If you begin to feel confident, dominant, and powerful everyday, your mind will embrace this new mind-set and you will be confident, dominant, and powerful in what you do.
And, the confidence a man exudes is the #1 thing we all look for in men!
Body shaving is one of those things that a lot of people do, but few really talk about. Athletes like swimmers, bodybuilders and triathletes do it for competitive reasons. The rest of mankind does it for aesthetic reasons. It has long been popular among gay men and has made its mark among straight guys trying to emulate the models and actors they see splashed on magazine covers or on screen, almost all who are sans body hair.

Sweating like a pig? That's nothing: Humans sweat more than any other mammal, causing us to lose the water and electrolytes crucial for optimal performance. Why are electrolytes so important? These minerals, found in your blood and other body fluids, regulate your hydration, blood PH, and critical muscle and nerve functions.
You can stay on top of your game by drinking the right liquids at the right time.
Before your workout: Start drinking water at least 15 minutes prior to any activity.
During: Try to down 8 ounces of water for every 20 minutes you exercise.
After: Weigh yourself before and after a workout, and subtract the weight of any water you drank while exercising. For every pound you’ve lost during a workout, drink 16 ounces of water. Then remember that guideline for your next workout. So if you're 2 pounds lighter after an hour-long run, drink 32 ounces more before or during your next run.

With the trend of going green sweeping the retail world (and pervading just about every form of media), it was only a matter of time before the fragrance world followed suit. Thusly, Nautica introduces Oceans, a new summer fragrance that’s not only easy on the nose, but easy on the environment as well. Oceans was developed with a new technology making it water-based instead of alcohol based. Not only does this cut out that sterile, pharmaceutical smell that comes standard on the first spritz of alcohol based colognes, but it also eliminates that sticky feeling on the skin – why didn’t someone think of this sooner!?
The scent itself is beachy and perfect for summer– bright and salty at first, but it settles into nice amber overtones, making it masculine, but not too musky. And don’t be fooled into thinking you’ll need to refresh every hour because of the water base. Even after running around the city on a sweaty morning, it’s still going strong by late afternoon. Plus, its H2O base makes it more biodegradable than its alcohol based brethren (not to mention the 100% recyclable packaging and bottle). To top it all off, in celebration of the launch, Nautica is partnering with Oceana, an ocean conservation organization to make sure the real oceans stick around for a long time.
So do yourself a favor and take a dip in Nautica’s Oceans. It’s the least we can do for a better smelling planet.
